she was in that killed her famous boyfriend and left her
with a Vicodin addiction and rumors about whether she had anything to
do with it. That drug dealer has now infected Skye, but she has no idea what’s in store (or in score,
the terrific work of Cristobal Tapia de Veer).

On thing to really beam about is leading lady Naomi Scott going for it all-out,
all snot, smeared blood and wide-eyed, full on-fear.
Scott manages to pour her humanity into the part – diva, whimpering, defiant, strung out, panicked.
She even sings on the soundtrack – songs that are
credible hits.
The smile demon collides with Skye as she’s about to launch a comeback tour and the pressure is
on. Finn is at his best here, mocking confessional TV interviews – a Drew Barrymore
cameo, a nice touch – full of self-work and apologies: „I let you down and I promise this will never happen again.”
Her management demands that she show up „smile and read from the teleprompter.” Skye’s mom – on the payroll – is little help: „You need to stay hydrated,” she tells her after Skye
is clearly in torment.
Finn has become a much more assured filmmaker and uses humor so well here, from nasty gangsters enjoying pumpkin Frappuccinos to our heroine Googling „Does vomit have DNA?” He’s still fond of jump-scares
and blood spurting and gross-out tricks, like a
body dragged by a truck until it’s just a smear with
entrails. One delightful moment has Skye chased by demonic backup dancers,
a Bob Fosse-meets-„Thriller” sequence.
Finn also has a ball putting his heroines into cringe-worthy
situations. In the first movie, a murdered cat got bundled into a kid´s
birthday present. In this one, it’s a impromptu speech in front
of music industry types that goes horrifically off the rails.
He’s got a deeper target: How do we quiet those voices in our heads that say
we’re no good?
Finn’s script sometime lags as he searches for an ending for „Smile 2,” seemingly
in two minds, before basically delivering both, kicking up dream sequences and alternate timelines like
a squid pumping out ink to cover its tracks. Over two hours ends up being too long.
But he has found a great satirical target, given life to a third
film easily and showcased another rising star to watch.
That’s a reason to, well, smile about.
„Smile 2,” a Paramount Pictures release that lands in movie theaters on Friday, is rated R for „strong bloody violent content, grisly images, language throughout and drug use.” Running time: 127 minutes.

LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model
is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy
has lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner
said on Monday.
„We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,” he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup
meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy,
which was the weakest among its large euro zone peers last year with a 0.3% decline
in gross domestic product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try to return the economy to
growth.
„After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Lindner said, adding
that the growth initiative was just a first step for an economic turnaround, „but we have to build on it.”
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said „ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances in order, or to put them back in order
where necessary.
„I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Lindner said.
„What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”
Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget
plans because he had not had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would do
so on Monday evening.
„We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,” Lindner said.
„We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and
reproductive rights
As their race for the US presidency comes down to the
wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite
theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics
the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost
to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,
500 votes — every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going
door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while they’re
at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed
by several Republican-controlled states amount to „a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, „Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely
limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat
them.
„Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,”
she told AFP.
– 'Abortion is murder’ –
As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young
people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.

„It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,”
Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
„I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.
„There are cases of incest or rape” that merit
exceptions, he conceded, „but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants
that have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
„People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he
said.
„My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the
border police who work for the federal government.
„I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,”
Lopez said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be „helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House,
Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat
vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party includes „a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about
„government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the
tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but
also „moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh,
a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent
toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is „running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of
the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael
DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed 'unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would 'only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and
Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker
2 in December 2022.

screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: 'With
all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and
Discovery merged in April 2022 and was 'open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the
sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not
want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with
a Warner spokesman saying the studio 'fully supported
the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had
appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz
and Steve Coogan.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.
Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes
as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport

ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and
there are many ways to serve them (see tip).
The veal in these gives a lightness to the result, but you
can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork mince. This is a good
way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.
The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have a meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash
of olive oil over a medium heat, then add half the chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add the tomatoes and when the liquid starts to bubble,
reduce to a simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20
minutes, to create a thick sauce), while you make the
meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft.
In another bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and the rest of the onions and garlic.
Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first.
Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14
meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all over.
If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together,
setting each batch aside on a plate while you cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and
set aside. Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a
medium heat. Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook through.
Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta
according to the packet instructions until al dente. Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary, and then transfer it back to
the pan and toss it with a little olive oil and butter.
Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with
the meatballs and sauce. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a
sprinkle of parmesan.

Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated blood fest, which has received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences

The film earned $18.3 million at the box office according
to The Numbers.
Landing in third place was Joker: Folie à Deux. After winning the box
office competition during its debut weekend could not overcome the bad reviews,
enduring an 82-percent decline in ticket sales.
The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being
in more than four thousand theaters across the US.

taken by theaters — though Warner Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying 'Any estimates suggested by anonymous „insiders”
or „rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is
reported as fact.’
'The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with
this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its
home viewing and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was
positive for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds of its
net revenues to come from „smoke-free” products
by 2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a
driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest
market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from
May 2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a
host of key U.S. states ahead of the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two
unnamed U.S. states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from 2025, he continued.
„We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune its
approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow
but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the
first year would make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
„now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies,
said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.
It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had
been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including
for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA,
executives said.

and warmer temperatures, as they provide a lighter and more breathable option,’ the
high street giant added. ‘You can achieve that elegant, barely-there look with a little extra coverage.’
Similarly, intricate patterns, logos and glitter are best suited for evening looks, says
M&S. ‘For a daytime or office look, stick with polka dots or diamond
patterned tights, or if you’re looking for some added cosiness, try cable-knit tights for some subtle texture.’

Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot
100 at No. 27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead
with her next album, which she described as both 'fun’ and 'darker.’
Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga said that she’s been focused
on the production side of her new songs.
'I love producing — I always have — and something that was really important to me
making my seventh studio album was blending live instrumentation with programming,’ she explained.

'The album is not extremely serious in that it’s very fun and meant to
be enjoyed at a party, in a club, or at home having personal fun time —
to be free of your worries at home or walking through life,’ she insisted.

Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last
month to rave reviews from music critics, who lauded it as
a return to the star’s roots.
Unfortunately, the acclaim failed to translate to the charts, with Disease debuting at No.
27 on the Hot 100 – her worst entry for a lead single in 16
years.
On the bright side, Gaga is currently enjoying one of her biggest hits
in years thanks to her Bruno Mars duet, Die With a Smile.
The ballad has so far reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 and No.
1 on the Pop Airplay Chart.

LONDON, July 16 (Reuters) – Health campaigners have written to U.S.
regulators accusing Philip Morris International of misrepresenting past regulatory decisions,
seeking to disrupt the launch of its flagship heated tobacco device IQOS in the United States.
The world’s biggest tobacco company by market value has spent billions of dollars developing the product,
which investors see as key to driving future growth.
But it needs permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to sell it in the
world’s second largest tobacco market by revenue.
Six anti-tobacco and health groups, including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the
American Lung Association, wrote to the FDA to oppose
IQOS-related applications PMI has submitted to the
agency.
„PMI has repeatedly made misleading and deceptive statements wrongly suggesting that the FDA has found that IQOS reduces the risk of disease,”
the letter, dated June 27 and reviewed by Reuters, said.
The campaign groups allege that PMI violated the FDA’s
orders by suggesting IQOS offered lower risks than cigarettes.
Their letter cited four examples of such statements in the United States, the Philippines, Mexico and
Kazakhstan.
They also said in the letter that upcoming independent studies contradict PMI’s findings about
how many IQOS users completely switch to the device from cigarettes.
Presentations on the studies from the International
Tobacco Control Project (ITC) at Canada’s University of
Waterloo are attached to the letter as exhibits.
They show the ITC found a far lower rate of IQOS users
had quit smoking in Japan and Korea than estimates from PMI.
These factors „directly bear on whether PMI should be permitted to market IQOS” in the United States, the campaigners’ letter said.
The contents of the letter have not been previously reported.
Asked by Reuters to respond to the letter, a PMI spokesperson said the company was proud to discuss the FDA’s
conclusions on IQOS.
The spokesperson did not initially address each example but said some of the
language flagged by campaigners was, in the company’s view,
compatible with the FDA’s orders. On Tuesday, the
spokesperson added that this was true all of the language cited in the campaigners’ letter.
„Wherever we discuss our science and our products, we do so in accordance with all applicable laws,” the spokesperson said.
Reuters could not determine whether the campaigners’ letter would change the FDA’s approach to IQOS.
The agency said it had received the letter and would respond directly to the senders.
It did not comment further.
Devices like IQOS heat up sticks of ground tobacco without burning them in an attempt to avoid the harmful chemicals released via combustion.
The FDA first authorised PMI to sell an older version of IQOS in 2019.
It subsequently authorised the company to market it as offering
reduced exposure to harmful chemicals versus cigarettes for smokers who completely switch – known as an „exposure modification order”.
The FDA can also issue a „risk modification order”,
authorising a company to claim its product reduces the risk of tobacco-related harm and
disease. But this is harder to prove, especially without long-term, epidemiological studies.
The FDA rejected PMI’s previous application to say its older IQOS device
results in reduced health risks, saying there wasn’t sufficient evidence to support this.
PMI applied in 2023 to renew its existing exposure modification orders.
Later that year, it also applied to sell and market a newer version of the
IQOS device in the same way. The FDA has yet to decide on these applications.
Marketing the product as having health benefits compared to traditional cigarettes could help PMI persuade consumers to switch as well as afford it tax benefits versus
cigarettes in some U.S. states.
PMI is preparing to sell an older IQOS device in four U.S. cities.
However, it has said it will not pursue a full U.S.
launch until the newer version of its device
gets FDA authorisation.

The campaign groups also cited preliminary data from ITC studies
in Japan and Korea, saying it contradicted PMI’s findings about how many IQOS users completely switch from cigarettes.
The studies have been presented at academic conferences
but have not yet been submitted for publication in a journal, ITC researchers told Reuters.
As a result, study abstracts have been peer reviewed but the full findings have yet to go
through that process.
Japan is IQOS’ largest market and the introduction of heated tobacco there
coincided with an accelerated decline in cigarette sales.
PMI estimates more than seven out of 10 of its registered IQOS customers globally have quit cigarettes.
A 2023 PMI application to the FDA emphasised that the majority of IQOS users were
using IQOS exclusively.
However, the ITC’s researchers put the percentage of all IQOS users that had quit smoking at
just 15% in Japan and 30% in Korea in 2021.
Users most commonly used IQOS and cigarettes simultaneously, known as „dual use”, often leading to
an overall increase in tobacco consumption, the ITC researchers found.
PMI pointed to a 2019 Japanese government health survey, where 75% of respondents
who reported using heated tobacco said they did not smoke.
However, a paper published this year, led by researchers from Georgetown University, highlighted flaws
in the government’s survey, including changes to the question format that can lead to under-reporting of smoking.
Other surveys have also found higher rates of dual use than the government,
it said.

'It’s the worst film ever made.
'I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, 'Oh, this was loved by incels.
This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong
kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism! All these think pieces.

Despite the negative reviews a number of
fans of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box
office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections,
and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth,
in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of
sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
'Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was
'100% as divisive as people are making it
out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the
storytelling they presented. It never deviated to be a film full of Easter
eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, 'I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the
